Zēngjí xù chuándēng lù 增集續傳燈錄

Augmented Continued Record of the Transmission of the Lamp

compiled by 文琇 (Wénxiù, sobriquet Nánshí 南石), Míng Yǒnglè 15 (1417)

About the work

A six-juan supplemental continuation of the Xù chuándēng lù 續傳燈錄 (KR6q0016), adding Chán masters of the late Yuán and early Míng that the anonymous Xù chuándēng lù had not covered or had covered only thinly. Compiled by 文琇 Nánshí Wénxiù, a Línjì-line monk active in the early Míng.

Abstract

One of the early-fifteenth-century responses to the perceived inadequacy of the anonymous Xù chuándēng lù’s treatment of the most recent generations: Wénxiù supplements its coverage with fuller entries on the Yuán-to-early-Míng Línjì line, to which he himself belonged. Compact in scale compared to the Wǔdēng huìyuán xùlüè 五燈會元續略 (KR6q0013) and Wǔdēng yántǒng 五燈嚴統 (KR6q0019), but earlier in date and preserved in the Jiāxīng 嘉興 canon.

Translations and research

No English translation. Occasional citation in studies of early-Míng Chán; no dedicated monograph.

Other points of interest

Wénxiù’s work is a useful terminus for Yuán-Míng transition Chán genealogy, preceding the larger seventeenth-century continuations by nearly two centuries.
