Wénxiù 文琇
Early-Míng Yángqí-branch Línjì Chán master, zì Nánshí 南石. 55th lièzǔ of Jìngshān. Native of Kūnshān 崑山 (Sūzhōu), lay surname Lǐ 李. Born 1345; died on the 24th of the 9th month of Yǒnglè 16 (1 November 1418), shìshòu 74, sēnglà 67. Dharma-heir of Xíngzhōng Zhìrén 行中至仁 (1309–1382) — one of 行端 Yuánsǒu Xíngduān’s heirs — and thus in the same fourth-generation-from-Xíng-duān cohort as Yáo Guǎngxiào (i.e. Dúān Dàoyǎn, 智及-heir).
Ordained at Shàolóngān 紹隆菴 under Zhìxīng 智興; in Hóngwǔ 4 (1371) went to Hǔqiūshān 虎丘山 to hear Xíngzhōng Zhìrén expound, was recognised by Xíngzhōng, and became shìsī 侍司 and then jìshì 記室 under him. Received dharma-transmission from Xíngzhōng before the latter’s death in 1382.
Abbacy sequence: Sūzhōu Pǔmén 普門禪寺, Língyán Bàoguó Yǒngzuò 靈巖報國永祚禪寺, Sūzhōu Wànshòu Bàoēn Guāngxiào 萬壽報恩光孝禪寺. In the early Yǒnglè era (from c. 1403) was summoned by imperial edict to Běijīng to participate in the editorial team for the Yǒnglè dàdiǎn 永樂大典, where he remained for three years. On completion of that work — and after participating in the great dàbàoēn 大報恩 court liturgy — was installed by the Sēnglù sī 僧錄司 as Jìngshān abbot; later retired near the stupa of Xíngduān (Jìzhào) to the south. Died at Jìngshān in 1418.
His four-juan yǔlù survives as Nánshí Wénxiù chánshī yǔlù 南石文琇禪師語錄 (KR6q0355; X71 n1422), with preface by Yáo Guǎngxiào 姚廣孝 dated Yǒnglè 11 (1413). He also authored a six-juan Zēngjí Xùchuándēnglù 增集續傳燈錄 (KR6q0017, completed 1417) — distinct from the better-known 30-juan work of the same title by 居頂. Principal dharma-heir: 宗謐 Cuìfēng Zōngmì 翠峰宗謐.
