Wànsōng lǎorén píngchàng Tiāntóng Jué héshàng niāngǔ qǐngyì lù 萬松老人評唱天童覺和尚拈古請益錄

Old-Man Wànsōng’s Evaluation-Singing on Master Tiāntóng Jué’s Niāngǔ: Record of Requesting-Benefit — a two-juan Southern-Sòng / Jīn / Yuán Cáodòng collaborative commentary, companion to the more famous Cóngróng lù KR6q0114. Where the Cóngróng lù has Wànsōng Xíngxiù 萬松行秀 (1166–1246) commenting on Hóngzhì Zhèngjué’s 宏智正覺 (1091–1157) sònggǔ (verse-commentary), this parallel text has the same Wànsōng commenting on Hóngzhì’s niāngǔ (prose-commentary) — representing Wànsōng’s companion-treatment of Hóngzhì’s other major commentarial-corpus.

About the work

A two-juan Cáodòng niāngǔ / píngchàng collaborative commentary, X67 n1307. Non-commentary on a single parent Buddhist text; commentedTextid omitted.

The text gathers cases where Hóngzhì’s original niāngǔ prose-commentaries were given in response to disciple-questions (qǐngyì 請益 “requesting beneficial teaching”) — whence the title’s Qǐngyì lù 請益錄 (“Record of Requesting Beneficial [Teaching]”). Wànsōng’s Yuán-era píngchàng adds running-commentary in the same style as his famous Cóngróng lù.
