Yùquán Liányuè Zhèng chánshī yǔlù 玉泉蓮月正禪師語錄
Recorded Sayings of Chán Master Liányuè Zhèng at Yùquán by 道正 (說), 發慧 (等錄)
About the work
Two-juan yǔlù of Liányuè Dàozhèng 道正 蓮月道正 (1614–1691), companion volume to the 6-juan 《蓮月禪師語錄》 (KR6q0445) and announced at the close of its contents-list as fù zhù Yùquán yǔlù èr juan 附住玉泉語錄二卷. Where B235 covers Liányuè’s Guìzhōu / Sìchuān abbacies through c. 1670, this recension records his Húběi tenure at the historic Yùquánsì 玉泉寺 on Yùquánshān 玉泉山 in Dāngyángxiàn 當陽縣 (郢州, modern Yíchāng prefecture), the famed Suí-dynasty dàochǎng of Zhìyǐ 智顗 and the later residence of Shénxiù 神秀. Compiled by the fā-generation disciple Fāhuì 發慧 (ordination-nickname Xuěchuáng 雪幢). Printed as Jiāxīng Canon J29 B236.
Abstract
Compositional window. Juan 1 opens with Liányuè’s entry-sermon at Yùquán dated 康熙十五年五月初一 = 1676 5/1, preceded by his receipt of the abbot’s summons at Jiānglíng Fúchāng 江陵福昌. The foreword is a single preface (xù 敘) by Yú Tíngruì 俞廷瑞 (jìnshì, then zhī Dāngyángxiàn shì 知當陽縣事 with one-rank promotion), dated 康熙拾柒年黃鍾月 穀旦 = 1678/11, auspicious day. The text’s first-juan kāilú shàngtáng, jiězhì shàngtáng, and suìdàn shàngtáng sequences trace a ritual calendar of 1676–77 at Yùquán; the Yú Tíngruì preface gives notAfter = 1678.
Institutional context. Yú Tíngruì’s preface situates Liányuè within the Mìyún → Pòshān line: Liángōng wéi Mìyún zhī sūn Shíqí zhī zhí 蓮公為密雲之孫石奇之姪 — dharma-grandson of Mìyún Yuánwù 圓悟 via Pòshān, collateral dharma-nephew to Shíqí Tōngyún 石奇通雲 at Xuědòu 雪竇. The preface also notes the seven-year interval since Liányuè’s return from Tiāntóng stūpa-sweeping to Yùquán (i.e. Yùquán tenure from c. 1671), and names the restoring patron as Zhìtái Cài dà hùfǎ 制臺蔡大護法 (the Húguǎng governor-general Cài Yùróng 蔡毓榮, in post 1673–c.1680).
Lineage emphasis. The juan 1 sermons deliberately position Yùquán alongside Cáoqī 曹谿 as a twin northern-southern fǎzhuàng of Chán (nán yǒu Cáoqī běi yǒu Yùquán 南有曹谿北有玉泉), and repeatedly invoke the monastery’s Suí-era Zhìzhě dàochǎng and Shénxiù guóshī fǎxí pedigree. The content is heavily shaped by this site-conscious preaching: shàngtáng entries on Yùquán geography (Duīlánshān 堆藍山, the Zhēnzhūquán 珍珠泉, the Chìbìyán 赤壁巖 mistakenly ascribed to the Yùquán precinct) dominate.
Tiyao
Not applicable — Jiā-xīng-canon imprint (J29 B236). Yú Tíngruì’s 1678 preface provides the principal documentation.
Translations and research
- See KR6q0445 for the full research notice applying to the Liányuè corpus.
Other points of interest
- Historic site — Yùquánsì. The sermons insist repeatedly on the Yùquán dàochǎng’s continuity with Zhìyǐ’s Tiāntái zhǐguān foundation and Shénxiù’s Northern-School Chán residence; Liányuè’s rebuilding of the Yùquán compound in the Cài Yùróng patronage window makes this a documentary record of late-seventeenth-century Yùquán restoration as much as a Chán yǔlù.
- Different compiler from B235. Juan 1 colophon: ménrén Fāhuì lù 門人發慧錄. The fā-generation heir is a distinct compiler-circle from the Xìngróng 性容 / Fāwù 發悟 pair who edited the 6-juan B235, reflecting Liányuè’s migration east of the Three Gorges and a new Húběi disciple network.
