Pòshān Hǎimíng 破山海明 (Wànlì 25 dīngyǒu 1/21 wǔ-hour = 8 March 1597 – Kāngxī 5 bǐngwǔ 3/16 hài-hour = 19 April 1666) was the thirty-fifth-generation Línjì (Yángqí-branch) patriarch and the sole Sichuan-based dharma-heir of Mìyún Yuánwù 圓悟 密雲圓悟 (1566/7–1642). Lay surname Jiǎn 蹇 (branch of the Yǒnglè chief grand secretary Jiǎn Yì 蹇義 1364–1435, the 忠定公), lay name Jiǎn Dòngyǔ 蹇棟宇, self-styled Lǎnyú 懶愚. Native of Dàzhúxiàn 大竹縣 in Shùnqìngfǔ 順慶府 (modern Nánchōng area, Sìchuān). Tonsured at 19 sùi (1615) at Fóēnsì 佛恩寺 in his home district under the elder Dàchí 大持; the Shǒuléngyán crisis on chángzhù zhēnxīn drove him out of Sichuan; trained three years at Pòtóushān 破頭山 at Huángméi (whence the biéhào Pòshān), where a cliff-side self-oath and literal fall from the precipice resolved his doubt. Full ordination under Zhànrán Yuánchéng 湛然圓澄 in guǐhài (1623) at age 27 sùi. Joined Mìyún Yuánwù at Jīnsù 金粟 in jiǎzǐ (1624); received the Cáoqī zhèngmài láiyuán 曹谿正脈來源 transmission-slip in dīngmǎo (1627).
Fourteen abbacies across a 37-year preaching career, beginning with Jiāhé Dōngtǎ 嘉禾東塔 in jǐsì autumn (1629) and Liángshān Wànfēng 梁山萬峰 from guǐyǒu (1633) when he returned to Sichuan. After 1644 sheltered as village-level hùfǎ chaplain in Sichuan-interior monasteries through the Zhāng Xiànzhōng devastations, and in Shùnzhì rénchén/guǐsì (1652–53) founded Shuāngguìsì 雙桂寺 at Jīnchéngzhài (Liángpíng, modern Chóngqìng) on the remains of a Míng-elite villa with a pair of surviving ancient guì 桂 trees. Died in residence at Shuāngguì in spring 1666, shìshòu 70 / sēnglà 43, eighty-seven dharma-heirs enumerated including Zhàngxuě Tōngzuì 通醉 丈雪通醉 (Zhāojué line), Liányuè Yìnzhèng 印正 蓮月印正 (Yùquán line), Yànjū Héshēn 燕居合申, Shèngkě Déyù 聖可德玉 (Huáyán line), and Kōnggǔ Dàochéng 空谷道澄. Full-body stūpa at Gènlóngshān 艮龍山; shadow-hall at Chéngdū Zhāojuésì.
Notable Kanripo works by Pòshān: KR6q0402 《破山禪師語錄》 20 juan (J26 B177, the complete Yìnzhèng recension of 1680). Other non-Kanripo works include the twelve-juan Zhāojué edition of 1657 (compiled by Zhàngxuě), 《山居詩》, 《雙桂草》, and scattered inscriptions in 《錦江禪燈》 (also by Zhàngxuě). The sole Mìyún-line patriarch whose recorded sayings anchor a full Sichuanese “Shǔzōng” 蜀宗 lineage, and the subject of Jiang Wu, Enlightenment in Dispute (Oxford 2008) chs. 4 and 7; also central to the early-Qīng military-chaplaincy material (the “jiǔròu sēng” apologetic, the 1644+ Lǐ Yào-zi / Lǐ Yīyáng episode).
