Yúnxī Liángtíng Tǐng chánshī yǔlù 雲溪俍亭挺禪師語錄

Recorded Sayings of Chán Master Liáng-tíng Tǐng of Yún-xī by 淨挺 (說), 智淙 (等編)

About the work

Eighteen-juan yǔlù of Liángtíng Jìngtǐng 淨挺 俍亭淨挺 (1615-11-24 – 1684-11-01), Cáo-dòng-school dharma-heir of Sānyí Míngyú 三宜明盂 (1599–1665) and one of the most prolific Chán-master authors of the early-Qīng Hángzhōu monastic-publishing community. Compiled by fǎsì Zhìzōng 智淙 (智琮) děng biān. The Yúnxī (= Yúnxī of Hángzhōu) seat references his Cíyún 慈雲 abbacy. Printed as Jiāxīng Canon J33 B294; also preserved in the 卍續藏 collection. Companion volumes by the same master: KR6q0218 《學佛考訓》 (1670, 10 juan encyclopedic reference) and a series of doctrinal essays at KR6q0219 passim.

Abstract

Authorship. Per the 淨挺 note: lay native of Qiántáng 錢塘 (Hángzhōu); lay name Xú Shìchén 徐世臣 (huì 繼恩, biézì 逸亭). Late-Míng míngjīng graduate under the Hóngguāng court (1645); subsequently engaged with Sānyí Míngyú as a jūshì 居士 layman, with formal jìbié received at Yúnménsì. Tonsured at 46 (1642, after his parents’ deaths). Three abbacies: Cíyún 慈雲 (Hángzhōu), Fànshòu 梵受, Xiǎnshèng 顯聖.

Dating. notBefore = c. 1645 (post-lay-jìbié preaching activity, with the Hóngguāng míngjīng in the same year as his Cáodòng jìbié under Sānyí). notAfter = 1684 (Jìngtǐng’s death). Eighteen juan reflects the substantial documented preaching career across nearly forty years.

Lineage and heirs. Cáo-dòng-school via Sānyí Míngyú (1599–1665) line. Thirty named heirs including Zhìzōng 智淙 (this volume’s compiler). The Cáodòng affiliation makes Jìngtǐng a contemporary parallel within Hángzhōu’s Cáodòng establishment to Jìngqǐ 淨啟 (also a 三宜明盂 heir, the zhòngbiān of KR6q0459) — the two were dharma-brothers, with Jìngtǐng writing the front-preface to Jìngqǐ’s KR6q0459 under his lay-name Yìtíng jūshì.

Comprehensive Buddhist literary production. Jìngtǐng was distinctive for producing both monastic yǔlù (this volume) and substantial Buddhist scholarly work (the KR6q0218 Xuéfó kǎoxùn encyclopedic reference, the KR6q0219 series of essays). Yán Háng’s preface characterizes him as yú xué wú bù kuī, zhùshū mǎn jiā 于學無不窺著書滿家 (“his learning omits no field, his books fill the house”).

Other points of interest

  • Lay-monastic dual identity. Jìngtǐng continued to use his lay-name Xú Jìēn / Yìtíng jūshì for literary writing even after monastic ordination. This is documented in his front-preface to KR6q0459 (the Hóngzhì Zhèngjué zhòngbiān) where he signs as a layman — providing a unique within-corpus cross-reference between his ordained and lay-literary identities.
  • Dharma-brothers as Cáo-dòng-line co-revivers. Jìngtǐng and Jìngqǐ 淨啟 (compiler of KR6q0459) are dharma-brothers in the same Sānyí Míngyú line; their parallel publishing activity in the late 1660s and 1670s — Jìngqǐ recovering the Sòng-era Hóngzhì yǔlù, Jìngtǐng producing his own multi-genre Cáodòng output — represents a coordinated Cáo-dòng-line publishing program in early-Qīng Hángzhōu.
