Recorded Sayings of Chán Master Hóng-zhì Jué of Tiān-tóng Jǐng-dé Chán-sì in Míng-zhōu by 正覺 (說), 淨啟 (重編)

About the work

Four-juan abridged-and-reconstituted yǔlù of Hóngzhì Zhèngjué 正覺 宏智正覺 (1091–1157), the Southern-Sòng Cáodòng patriarch and principal proponent of mòzhào chán 默照禪 (silent-illumination), abbot of Tiāntóng Jǐngdé Chánsì 天童景德禪寺 in Míngzhōu 明州 (= modern Níngbō) for nearly thirty years from c. 1131 to his Shàoxīng 27 / 10/8 = 1157-11-18 death. Chóngbiān 重編 (re-edited) by the early-Qīng Cáodòng master Jìngqǐ 淨啟 (d. 1674-10-15) — DILA-affiliated as 多福淨啟 / 妙叶淨啟 of Tiáoxī, dharma-heir of Sānyí Míngyú 三宜明盂. Jiāxīng Canon J32 B272 (note: in Jiāxīng volume 32, distinct from the J29 cluster of contemporary 1660s–70s yǔlù). Front-preface by Yìtíng jūshì Xú Jìēn 逸亭居士徐繼恩 (Cíxī, Zhèjiāng), undated. Contents: juan 1 — shàngtáng / wǎncān / shìzhòng; juan 2 — jǔgǔ; juan 3 — sònggǔ; juan 4 — jīyuán / tǎmíng / míng / / .

Abstract

Status as recension. Distinct from the canonical 9-juan 《宏智禪師廣錄》 (KR6q0070 / T48 No. 2001), which preserves the integral Sòng-era recension compiled by Zhèngjué’s chief dharma-heir 宗法 Sìzōng etc. The present 4-juan volume is a Qīng-period reconstitution by Qíngyún fǎxiōng 晴雲法兄 (likely Jìngqǐ in alternate-name guise; see 淨啟 note) of material that had become scattered (sǎnwáng 散亡) over the shùbǎi nián 數百年 since Shàoxīng. Xú Jìēn’s preface explicitly frames the volume as a gathering from miscellaneous external sources rather than a fresh transmission of the canonical text: Qíngyún fǎxiōng yú tā jiā zájiàn zhě, guǎng wéi sōují 晴雲法兄於他家雜見者廣為搜緝.

Dating. notBefore = 1131 (Zhèngjué’s accession to Tiāntóng); notAfter = 1157 (his death) — for the underlying speaker. The Qīng compiler 淨啟 died 1674, providing a terminus ante quem for the Jiāxīng Canon imprint of c. 1670–73.

Doctrinal significance. Preserves Cáodòng silent-illumination fǎyǔ and jǔgǔ / sònggǔ material from the Tiāntóng fǎxí. The 4-juan structure (vs. the 9-juan canonical edition) emphasizes the jǔgǔ (juan 2) and sònggǔ (juan 3) selections — the two genres where Hóngzhì’s verse-precedent set most influenced subsequent Cáodòng practice (the Cóngróng lù 從容錄 KR6q0079 of Wànsōng Xíngxiù being the most prominent expansion of Hóngzhì’s sònggǔ bǎi zé).

Cáo-dòng-line significance. Jìngqǐ’s zhòngbiān sits within the broader early-Qīng Cáo-dòng-line revival of Sòng-era patriarchal materials by figures such as 道盛 覺浪道盛 (Tiānjiè), 元賢 永覺元賢 (Gǔshān), and others — a deliberate Cáodòng counter-movement to the Línjì-line publishing of the time. The Tiāntóngsì connection is particularly resonant: by the 1660s the seat had been held for several generations by the Mì-yún-line Línjì masters (圓悟 Mìyún Yuánwù; 道忞 Mùchén Dàomín; cf. KR6q0457), and recovering Hóngzhì’s Tiāntóng yǔlù served as a Cáodòng claim on the seat’s deeper historical pedigree.

Tiyao

Not applicable — Jiā-xīng-canon Sòng-text imprint (J32 B272). The Xú Jìēn preface provides the principal documentation of the Qīng-era reconstitution.

Other points of interest

  • Cross-referenced with KR6q0070. This is the second of two extant yǔlù recensions of Hóngzhì in the Kanripo corpus. The 9-juan T48 No. 2001 is canonical; this 4-juan J32 B272 is the abridged Qīng reconstitution. Material in this 4-juan volume is partly overlapping with, partly supplementary to, KR6q0070.
  • Tiāntóng pedigree-claim. Jìngqǐ’s recovery of Hóngzhì at Tiāntóng can be read as a 17th-century Cáo-dòng-line historical-pedigree claim on the same Tiāntóngsì then under Línjì-line institutional control — particularly poignant given the Cáodòng / Línjì doctrinal disputes from Hóngzhì / Dàhuì Zōnggǎo’s own time.
