Recorded Sayings of Chán Master Bù-yàn-Lè of Huá-yán [-yuàn] by 道樂 (說), 德普 (記錄)
Three-juan yǔlù of Bùyàn Dàolè 道樂 不厭道樂 (b. 1640-10-08, death year unknown), LínjìYángqí dharma-heir of Shèngkě Déyù 聖可德玉 (1628–1701), in the Guìzhōu / Sìchuān regional Mǐnshù 敏樹 sub-line of LínjìYángqí. Native of Sīnán Yìnjiāng 思南印江 (Guìzhōu), lay surname Yáng 楊. Recorded by his fǎsì Cíjì Dépǔ 德普 jìlù.
Dàolè’s career was conducted entirely in the Guìzhōu / Sìchuān upper-Yangtze region — a far-southwest LínjìYángqí outpost relatively isolated from the eastern Jiā-xīng-axis collections that surround it in the Jiāxīng Canon. Three abbacies: Xìnglóngwèi Lóngshānsì 興隆衛龍山寺 (Guìzhōu, entered 康熙丙辰 9 = 1676-10, held three years until war forced retreat); Zūnyì Yùquánsì 遵義玉泉寺 (Guìzhōu, entered 甲子春 = 1684); and Chóngqìng Huáyán chányuàn 重慶華嚴禪院 (Sìchuān, post-乙丑 = 1685 when he received fùfǎ from Shèngkě at Lúzhōu). The opening preface is by Yuānshuǐ Zhòng Bìxiān Gěmín 鴛水仲碧仙葛民 dated 康熙癸酉上巳日 = 1693-04-09 (Kāngxī 32, shàngsì festival). notBefore = 1676 (Lóngshān entry); notAfter = 1693 (preface). Other points of interest
The xíngyóu in juan 1 is unusually candid about the master’s pre-tonsure life: marriage at 13, widowhood from his father at 27, late tonsure at 31. The Chóngqìng Huáyányuàn was a major Sìchuān Línjì center re-developed under Shèngkě’s patronage in the post-Sānfān-luàn (after 1681) reconstruction era; Dàolè’s abbacy there represents the second-generation institutional consolidation of Mǐnshù LínjìYángqí Buddhism in the southwest.
