Shíguān chánshī yǔlù 石關禪師語錄

Recorded Sayings of Chán Master Shí-guān by 芳桂 (等編)

Single-juan yǔlù of Pǔmíng Shíguān Xínglíng 行凌 普明石關行凌 (b. 1614, death year unknown — last attested at age 60 in 1673), LínjìYángqí dharma-heir of Fèiyǐn Tōngróng 費隱通容 (1593–1661), thus a co-disciple of all Tōngróng’s principal heirs (Yǐnyuán Lóngqí 隱元隆琦, Mùchén Dàomǐn 木陳道忞, etc.). Native of Jiāxīng Xiùshuǐ 秀水, lay surname 顧. Compiled by his sole fǎsì Xiāngyán Fāngguì 芳桂 (1631–1708) děng biān. The work is paired in J38 with Fāngguì’s own yǔlù KR6q0543 (J38 B424), giving a teacher-disciple sequence.

The yǔlù documents teaching at three abbacies: Pánlóngsì 蟠龍寺, Kāifǎsì 開法寺, and Pǔmíngsì 普明寺 (the latter the principal seat, succeeded by Fāngguì in 1677). notBefore1660 (post-fùfǎ abbacy onset, since Fèiyǐn died in 1661 and Shíguān’s recorded sermons begin around then); notAfter1675 (Fāngguì took over Pǔmíng in 1677, so the yǔlù of his teacher closes around then). Printed as Jiāxīng Canon J38 B423.

Contents. Single juan: preface; shàng-táng; xiǎo-cān; jī-yuán; zàn (image-encomia for Śākyamuni, Maitreya, Amitābha, Mañjuśrī, Samantabhadra, plus two zì-tí); niān and sòng on classic gōng-àn (世尊拈花, 女子出定, 臨濟在黃檗喫三頓痛棒, etc.).

Other points of interest

The yǔlù fits naturally with KR6q0543 in the canon ordering. The xíngshí in juan 1 contains the unusual detail that Shíguān’s awakening came when sitting under a liúlí (glass) lamp, hearing the latch of the privy door open as a fellow monk emerged at night — typical of the Mìyún → Fèiyǐn pedagogy that emphasized sudden environmental triggers (“起發疑情” through banal sound or sight) over scriptural study.
