Xínglíng 行凌, zì Shíguān 石關 (“Stone Pass”); also referred to as Pǔmíng Shíguān 普明石關 from his abbacy. LínjìYángqí dharma-heir of Fèiyǐn Tōngróng 費隱通容 (1593–1661). Born 明萬曆四十二年 = 1614 (癸丑冬圓花甲 — 60 in 1673 winter). Death year unknown — last fixed datum: alive at 60 in 康熙癸丑 = 1673. Native of Jiāxīng Xiùshuǐ 秀水; lay surname Gù 顧.
Formation. As a child loved poetry and study but came from a poor family. His parents, recognizing his attraction to monks, sent him to Jìngshān Sōngyuánān 徑山松源菴 to enter the order. At 19 went to Zhēnjìsì 真寂寺 to take tonsure under Wéngǔ dàshī 聞谷大師 and to take full ordination. Cān-fǎng under Xuěguān 雪關和尚 and Yǒngjué 永覺和尚, later Juélàng 覺浪和尚. One night while sitting under a glass-globe lamp, suddenly a monk emerged from the xiǎoqīng (privy) — at the sound of the door opening, his “tight enclosure of doubt” broke open and he could neither see his body within nor the world without. Final cān under Fèiyǐn and Wànrú 萬如. 丁酉春 = 1657 spring lectured on the Fǎhuá jīng at Fèngmíngsì 鳳鳴寺. Received final fùfǎ under Fèiyǐn at Jìngshān.
