Chìsōng Lǐng chánshī yǔlù 赤松領禪師語錄

Recorded Sayings of Chán Master Chì-sōng Lǐng by 道領 (說), 寂源 (錄)

Five-juan yǔlù of Chìsōng Dàolǐng 道領 赤松道領 (b. 1634-05-20, death year unknown — was 53 in 1686), LínjìYángqí dharma-heir of Mǐnshù Rúxiāng 如相 (1603–1672, cf. KR6q0564) and the principal LínjìYángqí zǔshī of Guìyáng Qiánlíngshān Hóngfúsì 貴陽黔靈山弘福寺 — the most important Buddhist monastery in Guìzhōu province under the Qīng. Native of Tóngchuān 潼川 (Sìchuān), lay surname Hán 韓; his mother carried him into Guìzhōu during the wartime chaos.

Recorded by his fǎsì Qiányù Jìyuán 寂源 . Preface dated 康熙辛未皋月午日 = 1691 lunar 5 written at Gǔyúzhōu 古渝州 (Chóngqìng). Plus a secondary preface dated 康熙二十年歲次癸亥桐月 (with a probable misprint in the era-year — 康熙二十年 = 1681 ≠ 癸亥 1683; likely intended is 康熙二十二年 = 1683 lunar 3). notBefore = 1667 (康熙丁未, Báiyún 白雲 invitation by 閫臺 Zhāng Guānghuàn 張光煥); notAfter = 1691 (preface). Printed as Jiāxīng Canon J39 B451.

Contents. Five juan: prefaces; abbacy yǔlù (Báiyún 1667; subsequent invitations from Yúnnán 1684 (康熙甲子秋, to assist with 九峰山開山靈和尚 sweeping); Hóngfúsì 1686 winter (大中丞慕公 = the Xúnfǔ of Guìzhōu); etc.); xíngyóu in juan 5; fǎyǔ, jīyuán, fóshì, liánfāngjì.

Other points of interest

This yǔlù is the most important documentary source for the founding of Guìyáng Hóngfúsì 貴陽弘福寺 — the leading LínjìYángqí monastery in late-Qīng Guìzhōu, which still stands. Dàolǐng’s three-year bìguān preceded the monastery’s institutional opening; the imperial-class lay-patron preface (“大中丞慕公” = the Guìzhōu Provincial Governor) at the 1686 invitation marks the formal state recognition of the foundation.
