About the work
A 2-juan compendium of Lotus-cult miracle-narratives by the late-Southern-Sòng Tiāntāi master Shízhī Zōngxiǎo 石芝宗曉 (1151–1214), abbot at Yánqìngyuàn 延慶院 in Sìmíng (Níngbō) and editor of the Lèbāng wénlèi 樂邦文類 (T1969). The work supplements the earlier Táng Lotus-cult collections — KR6r0066 Hóngzàn Fǎhuá zhuàn and KR6r0067 Fǎhuá zhuànjì — with Sòng-period material of which the prior canonical compilations had no knowledge: miracles, recitation-experiences, and devotional anecdotes from the Northern and Southern Sòng, much of it drawn from Tiāntāi-school records of the Sìmíng establishment.
Abstract
The text contains roughly 80 episodes in 2 juan, organised topically by mode of devotion (recitation, copying, hearing, expounding) on the model of the Táng predecessors. The Sòng-specific material includes accounts of recitation-miracles among Sòng jìn-shì literati and their families, miraculous recoveries of Lotus manuscripts from fire and flood in the Northern-Sòng establishments, reincarnation-narratives connecting Lotus-recitation with rebirth in Tuṣita or in the Pure Land, and multiple stories of Sì-míng / Tiāntāi-shān resident monks’ devotional experiences. The work is one of the principal sources for the Sòng-period devotional culture surrounding the Lotus, complementary to (but quite distinct from) the doctrinal-scholastic Sòng Tiāntāi literature.
Composition is dated to the period of Zōngxiǎo’s editorial activity at Sìmíng — bracketed by the Lèbāng wénlèi (1198) and his death (1214). The text is the principal source for 了圓’s KR6r0070 (which extracts from Zōngxiǎo’s collection a short selection of “the most striking” miracles), and the comparison of KR6r0070 with KR6r0071 gives a clear picture of Liǎoyuán’s editorial principles.
The text was preserved through the Tiāntāishān / Sìmíng manuscript tradition, printed in the Jiāxìng canon (J), and incorporated into the Manji Xuzangjing (X78 no. 1540) on that basis.

Other points of interest
宗曉 is best-known for his Pure-Land editorial work — the Lèbāng wénlèi 樂邦文類 (T1969) and the Lèbāng yígǎo 樂邦遺稿 (T1970), both major Sòng Tiāntāi-Pure-Land syntheses. The Fǎhuájīng xiǎnyìng lù shows that his editorial scope extended also to the Sòng Lotus-cult tradition, and the work testifies to the integration of Lotus and Pure-Land devotion in the late-Southern-Sòng Tiāntāi establishment — a synthesis that would dominate East-Asian Buddhist devotion for the rest of the imperial period.
