Tiānzhúguó Pútídámó chánshī lùn 天竺國菩提達摩禪師論
Treatise of the Indian Chán Master Bodhidharma (recension b — Běi-xīn 1254) falsely ascribed to 菩提達摩; critical edition by 方廣錩 (整理)
About the work
The second of two Dūnhuáng recensions of the Tiānzhúguó Pútídámó chánshī lùn — see KR6v0002 for the full literary description. This recension is edited from Beijing Library Běixīn 1254 alone (head damaged, tail intact; see also KR6v0003 and KR6v0004 which were copied on the same scroll). Recension b differs from recension a (P. 2039 / KR6v0024) in two principal ways: (1) the head is missing approximately 300 characters, but (2) the tail extends recension a by approximately 600 characters of summary plus a Mahāyāna / Hīnayāna chán dialogue not found in recension a, which Fāng treats as later interpolation.
Abstract
See KR6v0002 for the textual-historical and bibliographic discussion. Recension b is the principal evidence for treating KR6v0002–KR6v0004 as fragments of a single Chánzàng 禪藏 scroll. Where recension a (P. 2039) probably represents an earlier or unexpanded text, recension b exhibits the typical pattern of late-Táng / Five-Dynasties Dūnhuáng manuscript-tradition: copying preserves the work but accretes summary and supplementary dialogue.
