About the work
The first of two Dūnhuáng recensions of the Tiānzhúguó Pútídámó chánshī lùn — see KR6v0002 for the full discussion of the work, its content, and its place in early-Chán literature. KR6v0002 published a combined edition collating both witnesses; KR6v0024 publishes recension a alone, edited from P. 2039 (BnF) — the original Pelliot Dūnhuáng manuscript identified by Tanaka Ryōshō 田中良昭. This recension preserves the head- and tail-titles “Tiānzhúguó Pútídámó chánshī lùn” 天竺國菩提達摩禪師論 and “Dámó chánshī lùn” 達摩禪師論 respectively.

Fāng Guǎngchāng’s decision to issue separate editions of the two witnesses (as KR6v0024 and KR6v0025, in addition to the combined critical edition of KR6v0002) reflects his programmatic methodology for handling apocryphal Chinese Buddhist texts that have evolved into substantively divergent recensions: rather than producing a single eclectic critical text, he aims to make each independent witness available as a textual document in its own right.
