Wǔfēng Rúxué 五峰如學 (1585–1633), Wúwéi 無為. Late-Míng Línjì (Yángqí-branch) Chán master, 35th-generation dharma-heir of Mìyún Yuánwù 密雲圓悟 (1566–1642) of Tiāntóng 天童, and principal founder-reviver of the Dàwéi Tóngqìngsì 大溈同慶寺 on Dàwéishān 大溈山 in Húnán. Native of Líntóng 臨潼 (modern Xīān), lay surname Rèn 任, son of a local official. Tonsured fǎmíng Rúxué at twenty (Wànlì 32 jiǎchén = 1604) at Dàlǐngsì 大嶺寺 on Wǔtáishān 五臺山 under the elder Tiānqí 天齊, having been prevented from earlier ordination by his surviving mother. Received full precepts at Wǔtái from the lǜzhǔ Chéngfāng 澄方律主. After years of pilgrimage — through Xióngěrshān 熊耳山 (where the elder Wúyán 無言 set him on Qīngyuán’s 廬陵米作麼價 huàtóu), Hǔpáo 虎跑, Fúniú 伏牛 (the cloister-dǎqī in which a numinous out-of-body episode occurred at day six), Zhōngnán Wǔfēngyán 終南五峰巖 (three-year solitude, whence his epithet Wǔfēng), Kuānglú 匡廬 (Hánshān Déqīng’s monastery), Yúnmén 雲門 under Zhànrán Yuánchéng 湛然圓澄, and Jīngshān — he received final dharma-transmission from Mìyún Yuánwù at Lóngchí, perfected it at Tiān-tai Tōngxuán 通玄 and Jīnsù 金粟, and was formally sealed in Tiānqǐ 7 dīngmǎo (1627). He then closed himself in bìguān at Nánjīng Hóngjìsì 弘濟寺 for several years (1627–1631), then in Chóngzhēn 4 xīnwèi (1631) accepted the invitation to revive Dàwéi Tóngqìngsì, cutting stone and gathering branches under harsh conditions; the community grew rapidly. In Chóngzhēn 6 guǐyǒu (1633) he set out for Wǔtái, stopped at Jīnlíng at the invitation of Yú Jíshēng 余集生 the zhōngchéng, and on Chóngzhēn 6.7.22 zhèngwǔ (26 August 1633) died seated at the Jítuólín 祇陀林 in Nánjīng, aged 49 (29 dharma-years). Before his death he dispatched the Láiyuán fúzǐ 來源拂子 to his sole dharma-heir Yǎngzhuō Zhèngmíng 正明 養拙正明 (? – 1649) at Dàwéi, and charged him with continuing the abbacy. His body was cremated by his disciples Yǐngsù 郢素 and Fùzhì 復智 et al. in Chóngzhēn 15 rénwǔ (1642); the stūpa at Dàwéi was completed in Chóngzhēn 16 guǐwèi (1643), with tǎmíng by Táo Rǔnài 陶汝鼐 (1601–1683). Surviving works: the one-juan Dàwéi Wǔfēng Xué chánshī yǔlù 大溈五峰學禪師語錄 (KR6q0400, re-cut by his dharma-grandson Zhìhǎi 智海 in the Qīng) and the Wǔzōng pàixù 五宗派敘.
