Jìrěn 寂忍, zì Mìxíng 密行 (“Secret Practice”); often referred to as Kāifēng Mìxíng 開峰密行 from his last abbacy at Kāifēng Nányún chányuàn 開峰南雲禪院 in Húguǎng. LínjìYángqí 32nd-generation dharma-heir of Pòshān Hǎimíng 海明 (1597–1666). Lifedates uncertain — DILA’s 《疑年錄》 gives world-age 58 but no birth/death years. Native of Yúnnán Yíliáng 宜良; lay surname Gǔ 谷.
Formation. Tonsured at 14 at Zhú-zǐ-shān Zhú-lín-sì 竹子山竹林寺 under Shùn-yǔ 順語老師 in Yún-nán. At 17 entered Diān-nán Yún-tái-shān 滇南雲臺山 to bow daily before the Śūraṅgama title (拜楞嚴經題). At 19 the impermanence-and-death feeling stirred up; meeting a wandering Chán monk who gave him the wú 無 gōng-àn, he could find no entry. Later under Jì-fán 濟凡禪師 had a “rhinoceros lost its nose” (打失鼻孔) breakthrough. Followed Yàn-jū 燕居大師 to Xīn-qī 新漆 to take precepts. Sequential cān-fǎng under several teachers; final fù-fǎ at Shuāng-guì 雙桂 (= Pò-shān Hǎi-míng) in 順治丙申 = 1656.
Abbacies. Xùzhōu Xǐyù 敘州喜獄, Luòyuán Xīngguó 雒源興國 (entered 順治丁酉 = 1657), Bǎoqìng Dàbēi 寶慶大悲 (Húnán), Kāifēng Nányún chányuàn 開峰南雲禪院 (Húguǎng / Héngzhōu — the seat from which his Yúnnán dharma-heir 學蘊 received instructions, cf. KR6q0523).
Disciples (twenty-two listed in the Jǐnjiāng chándēng). Major figures include Sìdēng Yuányìn 嗣燈圓胤, Xīnzhuō Yuánhuái 心拙圓懷, Hánzhuō Chéngzǔ 含拙成祖, Zhīkōng Xuéyùn 知空學蘊 學蘊 (author of KR6q0523), Wàndé Fókāi 萬德佛開, and others.
Work. KR6q0545 《密行忍禪師語錄》 3 juan, J38 B428, compiled by fǎsūn (dharma-grandsons) Míngguǎng 明廣 and Míngzhēn 明珍 děng biān; preface by Zhúlàng Chèshēng 徹生 of Qīngchéngshān (cf. KR6q0544) dated 康熙甲戌蒲月 = 1694 (Kāngxī 33, lunar 5).
