Zhāng Huìyán 張惠言 (1761–1802), zì Gāowén 皋文, hào Míngkē 茗柯, native of Wǔjìn 武進, Chángzhōu, Jiāngsū. The principal Chángzhōu Yúshì Yì 虞氏易 specialist; co-founder (with 惲敬 Yùn Jìng) of the Yánghú 陽湖 school of gǔwén prose; and, with his younger brother 張琦 Zhāng Qí, founder of the Chángzhōu 常州 cí 詞 school of late-imperial lyric poetry. Jìnshì of Jiāqìng 4 (1799) ranking second in the èrjiǎ; Hànlín biānxiū, xiéxiū at the Imperial Library and the Wǔyīngdiàn. Died at 42, of illness, leaving his major Yúshì Yì program partially complete. Major works: Zhōu yì Yúshì yì 周易虞氏義 (9 juan, the foundational reconstruction of Yú Fān 虞翻’s lost Zhōu yì commentary, the principal Chángzhōu kǎozhèng monograph on the Yì); Zhōu yì Yúshì xiāoxī 周易虞氏消息 (the waxing-waning theory); Yílǐ tú 儀禮圖 (illustrations of the Yílǐ rituals via Zhèng Xuán); Cí xuǎn 詞選 (the anthology that founded the Chángzhōu cí-school, with the celebrated Cí xuǎn xù preface); Míngkē wén (1 juan chūbiān KR4f0066 + 2 juan bǔbiān KR4f0067 + 3 further biān).
