Huìyìn 慧印 / Shigetsu Ein

Edo-period Japanese Rinzai Zen monk, conventionally styled Shigetsu Ein 指月慧印 (Chinese reading: Zhǐyuè Huìyìn) or Sankō rōjin 三光老人 (“Old Man of the Three Lights”). Per DILA A000841: born Genroku 元禄 2 (1689–90), died Meiwa 明和 1.12.6 = 28 December 1764, age 76.

Known as a prolific editor and commentator of Sòng Chán classics in the Japanese Edo period. Edited (jiào 校) the Jūnzhōu Dòngshān Wùběn chánshī yǔlù 筠州洞山悟本禪師語錄 (KR6q0066) in its Genbun 4 (1739) recension — a re-editing of the earlier Genbun collation by his colleague Genkei 玄契 at the Shirahana-bayashi 白華林 press in Kyōto. The Taishō witness for the Dòngshān yǔlù (T47 n1986A) descends directly from Ein’s 1739 edition. Ein’s broader output includes editions and commentaries on other Cáodòng / Sōtō materials as part of the Edo-period Rinzai revival’s engagement with the full spectrum of Chinese Chán literature.
