Hānshān Déqīng 憨山德清
Major late-Míng Chán-Buddhist master (1546–1623); commonly known by his hào Hānshān 憨山 (“Foolish Mountain”). One of the four eminent monks of the late Míng (with 袾宏 Yúnqī Zhūhóng, Zǐbó Zhēnkě 紫柏真可, and Ǒuyì Zhìxù 蕅益智旭). Author of voluminous Chán and exegetical works, autobiography, and political commentary. Associated with the revival of the Cáoxīsì 曹溪寺 in Guǎngdōng during his Wànlì-period exile.
Mentioned in 譚貞默 Tán Zhēnmò’s 1657 preface to KR6j0760 as one of Tán’s Cuṇḍā initiators, transmitter of the two-syllable rolled-tongue fànyīn 二合彈舌梵音 pronunciation of the Cuṇḍā dhāraṇī.
