Pǔyán 普巖
Southern-Sòng Yángqí-branch Línjì Chán master, styled Yùn’ān Pǔyán 運菴普巖 (also Dàochǎng Pǔyán 道場普巖, zì Shàozhān 少瞻). Native of Qìngyuán fǔ 慶元府 (Sìmíng 四明), surname Dù 杜. Per DILA A009658 and the contemporary Yùnān chánshī xíngshí 〈炎宋安吉州道場山護聖萬歲禪寺運菴禪師行實〉: Shàoxīng 26.bǐngzǐ (1156) – Bǎoqìng 2.8.4 (4 September 1226), shì 71; he sat cross-legged and passed away at Dàochǎngshān in Húzhōu.
Studied first with Shígǔ Yí 石鼓夷 and Wúyòng Quán 無用全 of the senior generation, then received dharma-transmission from 崇岳 Sōngyuán Chóngyuè (1132–1202) — under whom he served as cānxué 參學 and is accordingly one of the six named recorders of Sōngyuán’s yǔlù (KR6q0311). His own abbacies ran through Dàshèng 大聖 in Zhènjiāng, Tiānníng 天寧 in Zhēnzhōu, and finally Hùshèng Wànsuì chánsì 護聖萬歲禪寺 on Dàochǎngshān 道場山 in Húzhōu. His yǔlù, the Yùn’ān Pǔyán chánshī yǔlù 運菴普巖禪師語錄, survives.
Yùn’ān is the crucial link in the 松源派 Sōngyuán pài of the Yángqí Línjì line: his principal dharma-heirs include Shífān Yǎn 石帆衍 and — most consequentially — Xūtáng Zhìyú 虛堂智愚 (1185–1269), whose Japanese heir Nānpo Jōmyō 南浦紹明 (1235–1308) founded the Ōtōkan 応燈関 lineage that became the main current of late-medieval and modern Japanese Rinzai Zen.
