Chóngyuè 崇岳

Southern-Sòng Yángqí-branch Línjì Chán master, styled Sōngyuán Chóngyuè 松源崇嶽. Per DILA A001037 and Lù Yóu 陸游’s Wèinán wénjí: 1132 – Jiātài 2.8.4 (29 August 1202), shì 71, xià 40.

Principal dharma-heir of 咸傑 Mì’ān Xiánjié (1118–1186). Co-compiler (děng biān 等編) with 了悟 of his teacher’s recorded sayings, the Mì’ān héshàng yǔlù (KR6q0064). Taught at Sōngyuán 松源, then at Yúnyǐn 雲隱, and finally at the Líng yǐn 靈隱 in Línān (Hángzhōu). The Sōngyuán branch of the Línjì line descending from him and splitting further through Yùnmén Shīfàn 運庵師範 → Xūtáng Zhìyú 虛堂智愚 (1185–1269) → Nānpo Jōmyō 南浦紹明 (Japanese Shōichi-ha / Ōtōkan 応燈関 line) is the principal channel by which Yángqí-line koan Chán was transmitted to Japan in the late thirteenth century.
