Huìshān Zhìhǎi 慧山智海 (fl. mid-17th c.). Early-Qīng Línjì (Yángqí-branch) Chán master, dharma-heir of Yǎngzhuō Zhèngmíng 正明 養拙正明 (? – 1649) at Dàwéi Mìyìnsì 大溈密印寺 (Húnán), and thus dharma-grandson (fǎsūn 法孫) of Wǔfēng Rúxué 如學 五峰如學 (1585–1633). Native of Shàngháng 上杭 (Fújiàn), lay surname Lín 林; precise lifedates not transmitted. As a boy of fifteen he was travelling with his merchant father in Hénán; stranded without resources one night, he took shelter at a small monastery, where a monk exhorted him to leave the household. At twenty-one he reached Hànyáng 漢陽 and tonsured at the Dìzàngān 地藏菴, then sought Zhèngmíng at Tóngqìngsì on Dàwéishān and served him for fifteen years. He then withdrew to Nányuè 南嶽 (Héngshān) and built a straw hut at the Pílúdòng 毘盧洞. When Zhèngmíng was approaching death in 1649 he sent a hand-written summons and his seng-jiā-lí robe, commanding the community to retrieve Zhìhǎi to succeed him at Mìyìnsì. Zhìhǎi duly took the abbacy of Mìyìn and “re-cut” (chóngkè 重刻) the yǔlù of his grandfather Rúxué — the one-juan Dàwéi Wǔfēng Xué chánshī yǔlù (KR6q0400, J25 B175) — and compiled (biān 編) his own teacher Zhèngmíng’s yǔlù in one juan (KR6q0401; Dàwéi Mìyìnsì Yǎngzhuō Míng chánshī yǔlù 大溈密印寺養拙明禪師語錄, J25 B176). His seven principal dharma-heirs include Yǔfēng Zhì 與峯智, Gǔméi Liè 古梅冽, and Yìān Yìng 易菴應. Sources: Wǔdēng quánshū 五燈全書 juan 82; Zhèngyuán lüèjí 正源略集 juan 9 and 11.
