Xuányì 玄億 (the catalog form; original dharma-name Xuányì 玄憶, post-1660s also written Dēngyì 燈億 — the latter is DILA’s primary form, possibly reflecting Kāngxī-era avoidance), zì Qiáosōng 喬松 (“Tall Pine”); often referred to as Qiáosōng Yì 喬松億 or Gāofēng Qiáosōng 高峰喬松 from his abbacy. Línjì 大慧 派 dharma-heir of Qìngzhōng Tiěbì Huìjī 慶忠鐵壁慧機 (1608–1663), thus a co-disciple of Héngshān Dēngbǐng 燈炳 (cf. KR6q0554) in the Sìchuān Jùyún 聚雲 sub-line. Born 明萬曆己未十一月初六日 = 1619-12-11 Gregorian; death year unknown — was 51 in 康熙八年 = 1669. Native of Línshuǐ 鄰水 (Sìchuān); lay surname Féng 馮.
Formation. Almost 17 went to Huì-kōng-ān 慧空菴 to take tonsure; soon after met Fù-chū 復初和尚 and joined his community at Yán-fú-sì 延福寺 in his hometown — given dharma-name Xuán-yì 玄憶 by Fù-chū. Doubt about his own matter unresolved, traveled to Huá-yáng-shān 華陽山 to study under Nán-zōng 南宗禪師, then went to Jù-yún 聚雲 to study under Qìng-zhōng 慶忠和尚. Followed Qìng-zhōng on his refuge-flight to Nán-bīn Shí-fēng-sì 南濱石峰寺; then served the Cáng-hǎi (Tripiṭaka-storage hall) for six years. Received final fù-fǎ during a jié-zhì retreat at Qīng-shān 青山.
Abbacies. Zhōngzhōu Bǎiyánsì 忠州柏巖寺, Liángshān Gāofēng chányuàn 梁山高峰禪院 (the seat giving him his sobriquet Gāofēng), Èzhōu Dàbiéshān Wòyún chányuàn 鄂州大別山臥雲禪院 (Húběi, where he was abbot in 1669 at age 51).
