Héngshān chánshī yǔlù 衡山禪師語錄

Recorded Sayings of Chán Master Héng-shān by 燈炳 (說), 宗位 (編), 超源 (序), 藍理 (序)

Single-juan yǔlù of Héngshān Dēngbǐng 燈炳 衡山燈炳 (also Qìngyún Bǐng 慶雲炳) (1611-05-22 – 1680-07-13, age 70), Línjì 大慧 派 dharma-heir of Qìngzhōng Tiěbì Huìjī 慶忠鐵壁慧機 — a senior figure in the Sìchuān Jùyún 聚雲 sub-line, dharma-grandson of Jùyún Chuīwàn 聚雲吹萬 of Bǎofēng. Native of Héjiāng 合江 (Sìchuān). Compiled by his fǎsūn (dharma-grandson) Zōngwèi 宗位 biān, with the manuscript carried south for engraving by his third-generation grandson Jǐhuàn chánrén 几幻禪人 with the support of his Pǔtuó dharma-cousin Biéān 別菴和尚.

Two prefaces are preserved in juan 1: by 龍池後裔閩莆 Chāoyuán Dànyá 超源 (Mǐnpǔ, of the Lóngchí Línjì line) dated 康熙乙亥王春 = 1695 spring; and by Lán Lǐ 藍理 (1649–1720), then zhènshǒu Zhèjiāng děngchù dìfāng Dìnghǎi zǒngbīngguān zuǒ dūdū (Naval Commander of Dìnghǎi, Zhèjiāng), dated 康熙丙子孟春月上浣 = 1696 lunar 1.

The first abbacy is dated explicitly: Dēngbǐng entered Kuízhōufǔ Shízhù Jíxiáng chánsì 夔州府石砫吉祥禪寺 on 順治壬辰七月望日 = 1652-08-19 on the invitation of Sū Màoyǔ 蘇茂宇 of 祇園檀越; later abbacy at Qìngyún chánsì 慶雲禪寺 (giving him his second sobriquet). notBefore = 1652 (Jíxiángsì entry); notAfter = 1696 (latest preface). Printed as Jiāxīng Canon J39 B438.

Other points of interest

The yǔlù’s fifteen-year publishing delay (1680 death → 1695–1696 prefaces) reflects the post-Sānfān-luàn (1681) rebuilding of southwestern monastic networks; the manuscript was carried “south” by Jǐhuàn 几幻 (a third-generation descendant) to the major eastern publishing center, with Pǔtuóshān as the staging-ground via Biéān. The military-commander preface by Lán Lǐ is unusual within Buddhist yǔlù: by 1696 Lán Lǐ was famous for his conspicuous role in the 1683 Pénghú sea-battle that ended the Zhèngrégime in Tāiwān, and his preface is one of the rare points of contact between high Qīng military elites and a Sì-chuān-rooted LínjìDàhuì lineage yǔlù.
