Xīshī 西施 (5th c. BCE), legendary beauty of the late Spring-and-Autumn period, native of Zhūluóshān 苧蘿山 in the state of Yuè 越. One of the canonical “Four Beauties” (sì dà měirén 四大美人) of Chinese tradition; conventionally invoked alongside 楊貴妃 Yáng Guīfēi as a paradigm of female beauty, as in 胡文煥 Hú Wénhuàn’s preface to Xiānglián rùnsè 香奩潤色 (KR3eo020).
