Ruò’ān Tōngwèn 箬庵通問 (1604–1655) was a late-Míng / early-Qīng Línjì (Yángqí-branch) Chán master, native of Sōnglíng 松陵 (Wújiāng 吳江, Sūzhōu). He was a principal dharma-heir of Tiānyǐn Yuánxiū 圓修 天隱圓修 (1575–1635) of Qìngshān 磬山 (Yíxīng), alongside Línggāo Tōngyù 林臯通豫, Yùlín Tōngxiù 玉林通琇, and Shāncí Tōngjì 山茨通際. His principal abbacy was at Nánjiàn Lǐānsì 南澗理安寺 at Nánjiàn south of Hángzhōu, whence the epithet Nánjiàn 南澗; in old age he took the sobriquet Lǚbó lǎorén 旅泊老人 (“Old Man of the Lodger’s Anchorage”). He died on Shùnzhì 12.9.27 (26 October 1655), aged 52. Tōngwèn functioned as a major compiler and dharma-historiographer of his generation: as principal editor (dìngbiān 等編) of his teacher’s Tiānyǐn héshàng yǔlù 天隱和尚語錄 (KR6q0397), and as redactor (biāndìng 編定) of the Xùdēng cúngǎo 續燈存稿 (KR6q0030).
