Tōngmén 通門 (Mùyún Tōngmén 牧雲通門)
Late-Míng / early-Qīng LínjìYángqí Chán master. Hào Wòān 臥菴 (“Reclining Hermitage”); commonly called Gǔnánmén 古南門 or Gǔnán héshàng 古南和尚 (for the Gǔnánsì 古南寺); self-deprecating sobriquet Chùsǒu 樗叟 (“Useless-Tree Old-Man”). Lay surname Zhāng 張; native of Chángshú 常熟 (Jiāngsū). Lifedates 1599/1/27 – 1671/12/15 (Wànlì 27 – Kāngxī 10/11/15, age 73, per Tiāntóngsì zhì 天童寺志 juan 3).
Note on name-variants: The canonical DILA form is 通門. The Kanripo catalog’s 通明 for KR6q0212 is a transcription variant (the characters 門 and 明 are often confused in late-imperial manuscript transmission). The catalog-form is retained as an alternate-name.
Tonsured at 20 under Pòshān Dòngwén Chéng héshàng 破山洞聞乘和尚. Initial Chán-training with Bóshān 博山; received dharma-transmission from Mìyún Yuánwù 密雲圓悟 at Jīnsù 金粟. 31st-generation Línjì descendant.
Abbacies: Sìmíng Qīzhēn 四明棲真, Jiāhé Méixī 嘉和梅溪, Pòshān 破山, Jīngjiāng Hèlín 鎮江鶴林, Tiāntóng 天童, and Xiùfēng 秀峯. Died at Gǔnán in Shíhú 石湖 seated-meditation retreat.
Dharma-heirs: ten named masters including Yúnxíng Wěi 雲行瑋, Chóngyǐ Jùn 崇已峻, and Nányīn Yán 南音言.
Works: Qī huì yǔ lù 七會語錄 (his formal yǔlù from seven successive abbacies); Lǎnzhāi bié jí 嬾齋別集 KR6q0212 (his literary supplementary-collection). Also contributed a harmonizing-verse set to the ox-herding compilation KR6q0164.
Reputation: “Good at calligraphy, skilled in poetry and prose” (shàn shū, gōng shīwén 善書工詩文), per the Dào yǐng 道影 juan 2 biographical notice.
