Tōngjì 通際, zì Shāncí 山茨 (“Mountain Thatch”), biéhào Dùnsǒu 鈍叟 (“Slow Old Man”); often referred to as Shāncí Tōngjì 山茨通際. LínjìYángqí dharma-heir of Tiānyǐn Yuánxiū 圓修 (1575–1635) — one of the four founders of the Qìngshān 磬山 sub-branch (alongside 通琇 Yùlín Tōngxiù, Línggāo Tōngyù, 通問 Ruòān Tōngwèn). Born 明萬曆戊申七月十一日 = 1608-08-20 Gregorian; died 乙酉夾鍾之八日 = 順治二年二月八日 = 1645-03-05, age 38 (only 24 years as monk) — the youngest death among the four Qìngshān founders. Native of Tōngzhōu 通州 (Jiāngsū); lay surname Lǐ 李.
Formation. Started as a shāmí under Jiànchuān Dūn 鑑川敦. While listening to a lecture, was struck by the question “yī kǒu qì bù lái, xiàng shén-me chù ānshēn lìmìng” 一口氣不來向甚麼處安身立命. One night during jīngxíng tripped — sudden insight. First cān-ed Tiāntóng Wù 天童悟 (= Mìyún) at Jīnsù; later met Qìngshān Xiū 磬山修 (= Tiānyǐn Yuánxiū) and was sealed at first sight.
Abbacies. Hángzhōu Dōngmíng chánsì 杭州府東明禪寺; Nányuè Lǜluóān 南嶽綠蘿菴; Chángshāfǔ Liúyáng Nányuán chánsì 長沙府瀏陽南源禪寺.
Major historiographical work. Compiler of 《南嶽禪燈錄》 Nányuè chándēnglù — drawing together 133 monks from the new and old gazetteers, an important Húnán Chán biographical anthology.
Disciples. Major fǎsì include Ěrzhān Zūn 爾瞻尊 (= Dázūn 達尊, lead compiler of his yǔlù), Xuáncí Qiān 玄慈謙 (= Dáqiān 達謙), Mìyán Gāng 密巖剛, Qiěān Chú 且菴芻, Zōngxuán Zhǐ 宗玄旨.
Work. KR6q0608 《山茨際禪師語錄》 4 juan, Qiánlóng-canon No. 1649, compiled by fǎsì Dázūn 達尊 and Dáqiān 達謙 děng biāncì.
