Mǎzǔ Dàoyī 馬祖道一
Major mid-Táng Chán master (709–788), dharma-heir of Nányuè Huáiràng 南嶽懷讓 and grandson-disciple of the Sixth Patriarch Huìnéng 慧能. Founder of the Hóngzhōu 洪州 school and the most influential teacher of his generation; principal ancestor of the Línjì 臨濟 and Wěiyǎng 溈仰 houses of Chán. His recorded sayings are preserved in Mǎzǔ Dàoyī chánshī guǎnglù 馬祖道一禪師廣錄 (KR6q0267).
