SòngYuán transitional historian; native of Lèpíng 樂平 in Jiāngxī, son of the late-Sòng grand councilor Mǎ Tíngluán 馬廷鸞. Zì Guìyǔ 貴與. Placed first in the Sòng-period cáoshì examinations during the Xiánchún era but stayed at home with his father after the latter’s break with Jiǎ Sìdào 賈似道, and never travelled to take the metropolitan jìnshì. Under the Yuán he served as Director of the Kěshān 柯山 Academy and finally as Education Officer of Táizhōu 台州 rúxué. He devoted some forty years of private scholarship to the Wénxiàn Tōngkǎo 文獻通考 (KR2m0009), presented to the throne in 1307 and printed by imperial authorization in 1319—the third and largest of the Sāntōng and the most detailed surviving institutional history of the Sòng. The catalog meta entry gives Mǎ’s lifedates as “fl. 1254–1322”; CBDB and Wikidata give 1254–1323, followed here.
