Huìhóng 惠洪
Sobriquet Juéfàn 覺範 (“Awakening Model”); also called Déhóng 德洪 in some sources. Northern Sòng Chán monk, literary writer, and proponent of wénzì chán 文字禪 (“literary Chán”). Native of Yúnyáng 筠陽 (modern Yífēng 宜豐, Jiāngxī). Lifedates 1071–1128.
Dharma heir of Zhēnjìng Kèwén 真淨克文 (1025–1102) in the Línjì 臨濟 — Yángqí 楊岐 — Huánglóng 黃龍 branch. Friend and correspondent of Sū Shì 蘇軾 and Huáng Tíngjiān 黃庭堅; a central figure in the literary-Buddhist circles of the late Northern Sòng. Politically vulnerable: he was banished to Hǎinán in 1111 and again in 1116, returning each time to monastic life on partial rehabilitation.
Major works in Kanripo: Chánlín sēngbǎo zhuàn 禪林僧寶傳 (KR6q0040, 30 juan, biographies of 81 Táng and Sòng Chán masters); also Línjiān lù 林間錄, Lěngzhāi yèhuà 冷齋夜話, Shímén wénzì chán 石門文字禪 (his collected literary works), and a substantial yǔlù corpus. The principal Sòng-era literary expositor of Chán doctrine and the central figure in the wénzì chán movement.
