Huáiràng 懷讓 (Nányuè Huáiràng 南嶽懷讓)
Táng-era Chán master (677–744), dharma-heir of the Sixth Patriarch Huìnéng 慧能 and teacher of Mǎzǔ Dàoyī 馬祖道一. Active on Mount Héng 衡山 / Nányuè 南嶽; founder of the line that became the Hóngzhōu 洪州 school and, through Mǎzǔ’s heirs, the principal post-Huìnéng Chán lineage from which Línjì and Wěiyǎng schools both descend.
