Tánè 曇噩

Late-Yuán / early-Míng Yángqí-branch Línjì Chán master, Wúmèng 無夢 (also 覺夢), hào Mèngtáng 夢堂 (also 酉庵 Yǒuān); imperial title Fózhēn Wényì chánshī 佛真文懿禪師 (conferred by Yuán Shùndì). Native of Cíxī 慈溪 (Míngzhōu), lay surname Wáng 王; 1285 – 14 March 1373 (lunar 洪武 6.2.12). Contemporary with 梵琦 Chǔshí Fànqí (also Míng-zhōu-born; both trained under 行端 Yuánsǒu Xíngduān).

Widely read in the hundred schools from childhood; his discovery of the Platform Sūtra at the Yánqìng lecture-hall prompted him to seek ordination under Liáng Shàngrén 良上人 of Fènghuà Guǎngfǎyuàn 奉化廣法院. At twenty-three received the full precepts at Chánglú from Xuětíng Chuán 雪庭傳; attained awakening at Língyǐn / Zhōngtiānzhú under Xíngduān and was named his dharma-heir. Served as sījì 司記 at Jìngshān. From Zhìyuán 5 (1339) held abbacies at Sìmíng Xiánshèngsì 四明咸聖寺, Cíxī Kāishòusì 開壽寺, Tiāntái Guóqīngsì 天台國清寺, Xiàngshān Ruìlóngyuàn 瑞龍院 — where at near seventy his “hearing and vision were still sharp and he expounded the school’s doctrine with vigour.” In Zhìzhèng 17 (1357) founded the Ruìguāngyuàn 瑞光院. In Hóngwǔ 3 (1370) the newly-enthroned Míng emperor held audience with Buddhist elders and placed Tánè at the head; from there he became abbot of Nánjīng Tiānjièsì 天界寺.

Co-editor of Xíngduān’s yǔlù (KR6q0352). His own most consequential work is the 30-juan Xīnxiū kēfēn liùxué sēngzhuàn 新修科分六學僧傳 — a late-imperial re-organization of the Buddhist biographical tradition under the rubric of the six disciplines, surviving as X77 no. 1522 and a major source for Chinese Buddhist historiography. He also compiled the 《定應大師布袋和尚傳》 Dìngyìng dàshī Bùdài héshàng zhuàn (KR6r0107, X1597, 2 juan) — the principal Yuán-Míng-transition source on the canonical Maitreya-incarnation Bùdài 布袋. Died aged 89, sēnglà unrecorded; stupa at Guóqīngsì. Named dharma-heirs include Zhìyán 智巖 and Jìngshān Dàizōng Xīntài 徑山岱宗心泰.
