Zhìjí 智及

Late-Yuán / early-Míng Yángqí-branch Línjì Chán master, Yǐzhōng 以中, 別號 Xīlù 西麓, hào Yúān 愚菴; imperial title (from the Yuán Dìshī) Míngbiàn Zhèngzōng Guǎnghuì chánshī 明辨正宗廣慧禪師. 53rd lièzǔ of Jìngshān. Native of Wúxiàn 吳縣 (Sūzhōu), lay surname Gù 顧. 1311 – 3 October 1378 (lunar 洪武 11.9.4), shìshòu 68. Dharma-heir of 行端 Yuánsǒu Xíngduān (1255–1341); co-generational with 梵琦 Chǔshí Fànqí, 祖銘 Gǔdǐng Zǔmíng, 曇噩 Mèngtáng Tánè, and 法林 Zhúquán Fǎlín.

Entered religion at the Qiónglóng Hǎiyúnyuàn 穹窿海雲院 in his childhood; studied Huáyán under Xiánshǒu 賢首 (hearing lectures on the Dharma-dhātu Contemplation 法界觀). First visited Xiàoyǐn Dàxīn 笑隱大訢 at Jiànyè; attained a first opening on seeing autumn leaves fall onto the courtyard. Went to Jìngshān, met Xíngduān, presented his attainment, and received yìnkě.

Abbacies in sequence: Chāngguó Lóngjiào 昌國隆教 (from Zhìzhèng 2 / 1342), Pǔcí 普慈, Hángzhōu Jìngcí Bàoēn 淨慈報恩 (from 1358 on invitation of Chéngxiàng Dáshī Tiěmùěr 達失帖木爾), then two terms at Jìngshān. In 1375 he returned to his home temple Hǎiyún; died there three years later.

Named dharma-heirs: 觀通 Ruìguāng Xīyuǎn Guāntōng 瑞光希遠觀通, 希顏 Tiāntóng Yòngyú Xīyán 天童用愚希顏, 忻悟 Língyǐn Kōngsǒu Xīnwù 靈隱空叟忻悟, 寶盈 Xùnzhōng Bǎoyíng 巽中寶盈, Dúān Dàoyǎn 獨庵道衍 (aka Yáo Guǎngxiào 姚廣孝, 1335–1418 — key strategist of the Yǒnglè usurpation), Hǔqiū Nánchēn Zhìbǎo 虎丘南琛智寶.

Own ten-juan yǔlù survives as KR6q0354 (X71 n1421), with preface by Sòng Lián 宋濂 dated Hóngwǔ 8 / 1375.
