Xíngduān 行端
Late-Southern-Sòng / Yuán Yángqí-branch Línjì Chán master, zì Yuánsǒu 元叟, posthumous shìhào Jìzhào 寂照 (also self-style Hánshānzǐ 寒山子). 48th abbot of Jìngshān Xīngshèng Wànshòu chánsì 徑山興聖萬壽禪寺 (from Zhìzhì 2 / 1322 until his death in 1341, thirty years). 大鑑下第 20 世 dharma-heir of Cángsǒu Shànzhēn 藏叟善珍 (Xuěfēng Zhēn 雪峰珍, 1194–1277).
Born on the 16th of the 2nd month of Bǎo-yòu 3 (1 April 1255, “one day after the Buddha’s nirvāṇa”); died on the 4th of the 8th month of Zhì-zhèng 1 (23 September 1341), shì-shòu 88, sēng-là 76. Native of Línghǎi 臨海 (Tái-zhōu), lay surname Hé 何. Tonsured at twelve at Yú-háng Huà-chéng-yuàn 餘杭化城院 by his paternal uncle Mào Shàng-rén 茂上人 (also eventual guardian of 清欲 Liǎo-ān Qīng-yù); ordained at eighteen. First awakening under Cáng-sǒu at Jìng-shān; further study at Jìng-cí under Shí-lín Gǒng 石林鞏 (who became his close associate), then at Chéng-tiān under Jué-ān Zhēn 覺菴真, and at Yǎng-shān under Xuě-yán Zǔ-qīn 雪巖祖欽. Served as dì-yī zuò 第一座 under 淨伏 Hǔ-yán Jìng-fú at Jìng-shān before his first abbacy.
Abbacies in sequence: Húzhōu Xiángfèngshān Zīfú 翔鳳山資福 (from Dàdé 4 / 1300), Hángzhōu Zhōngtiānzhú Wànshòu, Hángzhōu Língyǐn Jǐngdé (from Huángqìng 1 / 1312), and Jìngshān (from Zhìzhì 2 / 1322). Received three imperial titles: Huìwén Zhèngbiàn chánshī 慧文正辯禪師 in Dàdé 7 (1303), Fórì Pǔzhào 佛日普照 in 1312 (after presiding over the Jīnshān shuǐlù 水陸 assembly by imperial order), and a third robe-gift; “in all he was bestowed the jīnlán jiāshā 金襴袈裟 three times” (tǎmíng).
Major dharma-heirs — at least thirteen named — include 法林 Zhúquán Fǎlín (1284–1355), 曇噩 Mèngtáng Tánè (1285–1373, author of Xīnxiū kēfēn liùxué sēngzhuàn), 祖銘 Gǔdǐng Zǔmíng (1280–1358, his successor as 49th Jìngshān abbot), 梵琦 Chǔshí Fànqí (1296–1370, KR6q0353), Língyǐn Huìmíng 靈隱慧明, Jìngshān Zhìjí 徑山智及, Xíngzhōng Zhìrén 行中至仁, Fúbào 福報, Yuánjìng 原瀞, Qīngliáng Zǐpián 清涼子楩, Jīnshān Xìngyuán Huìmíng 金山性原慧明, and Tiānníng Zǔchǎn 天寧祖闡 (who jointly commissioned the 1374 re-cutting of the yǔlù).
