Zhàoshuǐ 照水, Xǐxīn 洗心 (“Mind-Washing”) — also styled Chūntái 春臺 (“Spring Terrace”) in some prefatorial roles; often referred to as Xiāngyán Xǐxīn 香巖洗心. Tonsure-teacher: Zhèngjué Rùnguāng Zé 正覺潤光澤 (cf. KR6q0234); dharma-transmission teacher (fùfǎ): Báiyún Xiànglín Běnzhēn 本真 (1620–1691, cf. KR6q0571). Lifedates unknown — was 30 in 癸亥 = 1683 (the fùfǎ year), age 45 in 1698. Native of Jiànkāng Jiāngníng 建康江寧 (Nánjīng); lay surname Liú 劉.

Formation. At 20 dreamt of a five-colored lotus and an adorned stupa with himself sitting alone on top, surrounded by chanting monks; on waking he took a knife to his hair vowing to leave the world — but his parents refused. At 24 both parents died, and he took tonsure at Zhèngjuésì 正覺寺 under Rùn 潤和尚 (= 潤光澤), who placed him under Bǎiān Shī 柏菴師 as direct teacher. Took up the niànfó shì shuí 念佛是誰 gōngàn. One winter midnight on walking jīngxíng, suddenly had insight. Took full ordination at Míngshāzhōu 鳴沙州. While at Luóshān 螺山 heard an elder discuss the Línjì zài Huángbò chù chībàng 臨濟在黃檗處喫棒 gōngàn — broke through and his earlier doubt-cluster fell away. Returned to Zhèngjué; sent south to cān-fǎng (Xìngshàn, Jiànfú, Fēngxué, Jīnsù). Finally a year under Báiyún Xiànglín Běnzhēn received final fùfǎ in 癸亥春 = 1683 at age 30.

Abbacies (four). Huáyánsì 華嚴, Bǎoqìngsì 寶慶, Guānyīnsì 觀音, Xiāngyánsì 香巖 (the principal seat giving him his sobriquet Xiāngyán Xǐxīn).
