Zhēnxióng 真雄, zì Miàoyún 妙雲 / 玅雲 (“Wondrous Cloud”), early monastic name Shòufēng 壽峰, often referred to as Dàbēi Miàoyún 大悲妙雲 from his first abbacy. LínjìYángqí 32nd-generation dharma-heir of Jièān Wùjìn 介菴悟進 (1612–1673), thus a co-disciple of 圓法, 真璨, 真在. Born 明崇禎甲戌 9/7 巳時 = 1634-10-28 Gregorian; death year unknown (last fixed datum: at age 56 in 1690 winter; printing of the yǔlù in 1713 is posthumous or contemporary). Native of Jīnhuá Wǔyì 金華武義 (Zhèjiāng); lay surname Xú 徐.
Formation. Mother died when he was 9; he immediately sought tonsure at Huáyánsì 華嚴寺 under Zìhuà 自化律師, taking the early name Shòufēng. Took full ordination at Língyǐn 靈隱 under Jùdé 具德和尚. One day during a manual-labor pǔqǐng he became absorbed and walked off to the Běigāofēng 北高峰 viewpoint — at midnight, looking up to find the moon shining brilliantly, “the great earth and rivers became transparent and unobstructed.” Sought out a series of teachers: Pílíng Lúshè 毘陵盧舍 / Zǔyìn 祖印, Yáofēng Fèiyǐn 堯峰費隱, Nánjiàn Ruòān 南澗箬菴, Dùncūn Fúshí 遯村浮石, Yùlín 玉林, Gǔnán Mùyún 古南牧雲. 康熙庚戌 = 1670 spring went to Jīnmíng 金明 to meet Jièān; received final fùfǎ in 壬子 = 1672.
Abbacies. Shāndōng Línqīngzhōu Dàbēi chánsì 山東臨清州大悲禪寺 (entered after 1672); Zhèjiāng Jiāxīng Sāntǎ Jǐngdé chánsì 嘉興三塔景德禪寺 (succeeding 圓法, who had died in 1669); also Hǎihuì chányuàn 海會禪院 within the same complex. The third qǐngqǐ in the yǔlù is signed by 景德法姪 — younger dharma-nephew within the Jīnmíng 介菴 lineage.
Disciples. Twenty fǎsì listed in the liánfāngjì of juan 5; major figures include Tiānrǔ Jībǔ 天乳機哺, Tiānchī Jīshàn 天癡機善, Tiāngǒng Jīhóng 天鞏機黌, Tiānwéi Jīdé 天惟機德 機德 (lead compiler of the yǔlù), and the lay disciple Hé Dòng 何棟居士.
