Mǎ Shī 馬蒔 (fl. c. 1568–1620, 明), Xuántái 玄臺 (also Zhònghuà 仲化), was a late-Wànlì physician of Kuàijī 會稽 (modern Shàoxīng, Zhèjiāng) and the principal late-Míng exegete of the foundational medical canon. His three major commentaries —

  • Huángdì nèijīng Sùwèn zhù zhèng fā wēi 黃帝內經素問注證發微, 9 juan (the Sùwèn commentary, c. 1580).
  • Huángdì nèijīng Língshū zhù zhèng fā wēi 黃帝內經靈樞注證發微, 9 juan, c. 1586 (KR3ea035).
  • Nán jīng zhèng yì 難經正義 (a Nán jīng commentary, completed shortly after the Língshū).

— were composed over a single decade of intense work and established Mǎ as the dominant Nèijīng commentator of the late Míng. His Língshū zhù zhèng fā wēi is the first comprehensive systematic commentary on the Língshū (Wáng Bīng having commented only the Sùwèn), and remained the dominant Língshū commentary until displaced by Zhāng Zhìcōng’s Jí zhù (KR3ea025) a century later. His clinical orientation is broadly Dānxī-school. His lifedates are not precisely known; the Sìkù tíyào on the Sùwèn fā wēi gives him as Wànlì zhōng rén (a person of the mid-Wànlì period).
