Huáng Shēng 黃昇 (fl. c. 1240–1249), Shūyáng 叔暘, hào Yùlín 玉林 (so called for his Yùlín 玉林 dwelling) and also Huāān cíkè 花菴詞客 (after his other dwelling, Sànhuā ān 散花菴, “Hermitage of Scattered Flowers”). A Southern-Sòng -poet and song-anthologist of the late Chúnyòu 淳祐 reign. He gave up the examination career early and devoted himself to song-craft; he was a friend of Wèi Qìngzhī 魏慶之 (hào Júzhuāng 菊莊), the compiler of the Shīrén yùxiè 詩人玉屑, for which he wrote the preface. He is principally remembered for two great anthologies. The first, the Huāān cíxuǎn 花菴詞選 KR4j0066 — issued in two parts, ten juǎnTángSòng zhūxián juémiào cíxuǎn” + ten juǎnZhōngxīng yǐlái juémiào cíxuǎnKR4j0067 — became the canonical Southern-Sòng anthology. The second is his own Sànhuāān cí 散花菴詞 KR4j0056, one juǎn, originally appended to the Huāān cíxuǎn in imitation of Wáng Yì’s 王逸 and Xú Líng’s 徐陵 ancient practice of appending the editor’s own pieces. CBDB id 48577 attests a death-year around Chúnyòu 9 / 1249. Máo Jìn’s 毛晉 Jígǔgé editions mis-print his name as Huáng Zè 黃昃 (taking the seal-form 昇 of shēng as 昃 ); the Sìkù editors restore the correct reading.
