About the work
The Nèijīng biànyán in one juan is a short collection of forty-eight philological notes on difficult passages of the Sùwèn and Língshū by the eminent late-Qīng xiǎoxué scholar Yú Yuè 俞樾 (zì Yīnfǔ 蔭甫, hào Qūyuán 曲園), the principal continuator of the 王念孫 Wáng Niànsūn – 王引之 Wáng Yǐnzhī philological tradition in the late 19th c. The work is part of a larger interest in medical-classics philology in Yú’s late career, alongside his editorial work on 胡澍 Hú Shù’s Sùwèn jiàoyì (KR3ea006) and short critical writings on 張機 Zhāng Zhòngjǐng. It is included in Yú’s collected works Chūnzàitáng quánshū 春在堂全書.
Prefaces
The jicheng.tw source carries (KR3ea034_000.txt) a later Republican-era preface — Yú Qūyuán Nèijīng biànyán xù 俞曲園內經辨言序 by an anonymous Mínguó author. This preface frames Yú’s work as a defence of Chinese medicine against the early-20th-c. Westernizing tide (“歐學東漸… 甚至將軒岐之言逐節指摘冷嘲熱罵”). It cites 惲鐵樵 Yùn Tiěqiáo’s 群經見知錄 and a letter from the late-Republican physician 張山雷 Zhāng Shānléi to Yùn praising Yú Yuè’s textual scholarship; it locates the Nèijīng biànyán in this Republican-era defence of the classical tradition. The Yú Yuè text itself was first printed in 1881 in the Chūnzàitáng collection.
Abstract
Each of Yú’s 48 notes addresses one specific passage where, on philological grounds (phonetic-loan analysis, graphical variants, parallel passages in pre-Hàn texts), the received reading of 王冰 Wáng Bīng or the 林億 Lín Yì校正 is shown to be defective. Characteristic Yú readings: xī xī 蹊蹊 (rather than yī yī 翼翼) in Pí lùn; qū 屈 (rather than jué 厥) in Cì yāo tòng lùn; jí gōng 棘弓 (rather than jǐ gōng 戟弓) in Bǎn cǎo; etc. The method and the polemical tone match Hú Shù’s Sùwèn jiàoyì, and the two works are routinely cited together in modern critical apparatuses on the Nèijīng. Yú’s eminence as the head of the Gǔjīng jīngshě 詁經精舍 in Hángzhōu (where he taught generations of Zhèjiāng scholar-officials and physicians from 1868 onward, including 章太炎 Zhāng Tàiyán) gave the Biànyán unusual circulation and authority — it is the most widely-read philological treatment of the Nèijīng in late-Qing and Republican Chinese-medical scholarship.
