About the work
A five-juan late-Edo philological-doctrinal commentary on the Shānghán lùn by Tamba no Motokata 丹波元堅 at the Igaku-kan 醫學館 in Edo. The Shù yì is the doctrinal companion to his father 丹波元簡 (Mototane)‘s textual edition Shānghán lùn jí yì 傷寒論輯義: where Jí yì restores the canonical text by collating Sòng–Yuán recensions, Shù yì expounds the canonical meaning, drawing on and adjudicating among the major Sòng–Qīng commentary traditions.
Abstract
Composition window 1827–1840 is bracketed by Motokata’s emergence as senior figure at the Igaku-kan after his brother 丹波元胤 (Motoin)‘s death in 1827 and the work’s published circulation by the mid-Tenpō era. The text takes the structure of the received Sòng-edition Shānghán lùn (六經 conformation chapters) and supplies, clause-by-clause, a philologically rigorous exposition of canonical meaning that combines the Shānghán textual-restoration concerns of the Tamba school with the syndrome-discrimination concerns of the Qīng Shānghán tradition (柯琴 Kē Qín, 徐大椿 Xú Dàchūn, 尤怡 Yóu Yí). The work is the second of Motokata’s three great Shānghán / Jīnguì contributions, alongside the encyclopedic KR3ef051 Shānghán guǎng yào and the Jīnguì yùhán yào lüè shù yì (KR3ef085).
The Shù yì is the principal Japanese commentary on the Shānghán lùn in the philological tradition founded by Mototane, and remains an indispensable reference for any text-critical work on the Shānghán canon.
