Lèi biān Shānghán huó rén shū kuò zhǐzhǎng tú lùn 類編傷寒活人書括指掌圖論

Topically-Organized Cold-Damage Huo-ren-shu Digest with Palm-Pointing Diagrams and Discussions by 李知先 (Lǐ Zhīxiān, fl. twelfth century, 宋), versified digest reorganized and illustrated by 熊宗立 (Xióng Zōnglì, 1409–1482, 明)

About the work

A mid-Míng illustrated reorganization by the Jiànyáng 建陽 (Fújiàn) pedagogue-publisher 熊宗立 Xióng Zōnglì of the Sòng physician 李知先 Lǐ Zhīxiān’s Huó rén shū kuò 活人書括 — itself a versified digest of 朱肱 Zhū Hóng’s Lèi zhèng huó rén shū 類證活人書 (1107). Xióng has reorganized Lǐ’s mnemonic verse-digest topically (lèi biān 類編), added zhǐzhǎng tú 指掌圖 (palm-pointing diagrams) — a SòngYuán mnemonic visual aid in which clinical material is mapped to the palm and finger-joints — and supplied his own tú lùn 圖論 (illustration commentaries).

Abstract

The Kanripo source file is effectively empty (header only) — body content has not been digitized into the jicheng.tw edition. The work is bibliographically attested as one of Xióng Zōnglì’s many illustrated pedagogical reorganizations of canonical medical texts. Composition window 1450–1482 is bracketed by Xióng’s productive period at the Zhōngdé táng 種德堂 publishing house in Jiànyáng. The zhǐzhǎng tú form was the principal visual mnemonic technique of late-Yuán / early-Míng medical pedagogy, derived from the qímén dùnjiǎ 奇門遁甲 / yùnqì 運氣 traditions of palm-divination, and applied in Xióng’s hands to Shānghán clinical material as a memory-aid for the working physician.

The work is part of the broader Xióng Zōnglì publishing program at the Zhōngdé táng — one of the most important Fújiàn medical publishing houses of the fifteenth century — which produced illustrated editions of dozens of canonical medical texts in standardized blockprint format.

The Kanripo jicheng.tw edition is a stub. For the actual text content, see modern reprintings of Xióng Zōnglì’s medical works.
