The Jīnguì yùhán yàolüè shù yì 金匱玉函要略述義 (“Expounding the Meaning of the Jīnguì yùhán yàolüè”), 3 juàn, by 丹波元堅 Tamba no Motokata, is the doctrinal-supplement to his father 丹波元簡 Tamba no Mototane’s philological collation of the Jīnguì yàolüè — Mototane’s Jīnguì yùhán jīng 金匱玉函經 collation. Where Mototane’s collation fixes the critical text, Motokata’s Shù yì offers his integrating doctrinal exposition.
Abstract
The work pairs with the Shānghán lùn shù yì (KR3eu047) as the second half of Motokata’s doctrinal-supplement programme. The Jīnguì yàolüè — the chronic-disease and miscellaneous-disease companion to the Shānghán lùn — has fewer prior commentaries than the Shānghán and Motokata’s Shù yì is one of the principal post-Sòng integrating commentaries: he works through the disease-by-disease chapters with attention to prescription-application logic, drawing on his father’s collation, the Qīng imperial Yīzōng jīnjiàn commentary (KR3eu029), and the Qīng private commentators (especially 尤怡 Yóu Yí’s Jīnguì yàolüè xīn diǎn 金匱要略心典 of 1729 and 徐彬 Xú Bīn’s Jīnguì yàolüè lùnzhù of 1671).
