Sūtra of the Names of the Thousand Buddhas of the Future Starry Aeon (recension a) Translator unknown (失譯)

About the work

The Wèilái xīngxiù jié qiān fómíng jīng enumerates the thousand Buddhas of the future aeon, the “Starry Aeon” (xīngxiù jié 星宿劫), completing the “three aeons, three thousand Buddhas” (sān jié sānqiān fó) system alongside the past-aeon (KR6i0022KR6i0023) and present-aeon (KR6i0024KR6i0025) texts. Two recensions are preserved in the Taishō: T448a (this text) and T448b (KR6i0027). The text is anonymous; the “a” recension is supported by major canon editions.

Abstract

T448a is the principal Taishō recension of the future-aeon thousand-Buddha-names list. The “Starry Aeon” (xīngxiù jié 星宿劫) is a Chinese Buddhist cosmological concept for the aeon following the present bhadrakalpa, in which a thousand more Buddhas will appear; the name suggests an aeon characterized by stars (xīngxiù 星宿, “lunar lodges / asterisms”). The three-aeon structure completes a devotional calendar that encompasses all of Buddhist time. This text completes the group; see KR6i0022KR6i0025 for the past- and present-aeon parallels.
