About the work
A one-fascicle Tang Cintāmaṇi-cakra dhāraṇī-sūtra translated by Yìjìng (義淨, 635–713), the great pilgrim-translator who returned from twenty-five years in India and Śrīvijaya in 695 and led the post-武則天 Wǔ Zétiān imperial translation programme. The text is one of the four Tang renderings of the Cintāmaṇi-cakra-dhāraṇī (cf. KR6j0287, KR6j0289, KR6j0290).
Abstract
The opening situates the discourse at Khaḍgar-aśrama (伽栗斯山 = Khaḍgārya-giri, “Sword Mountain”), one of the standard mountain-locations of the Avalokiteśvara cycle. Avalokiteśvara approaches the Buddha and discloses his Wish-Fulfilling Heart Dhāraṇī. Yìjìng’s recension is the most concise of the four Tang versions: a single core dhāraṇī, the recitation procedure, and the salient worldly fruits. The Sanskrit transliteration follows Yìjìng’s standard apparatus, which in this period had become highly systematic following his long stay in India. The four Tang Cintāmaṇi-cakra recensions (KR6j0287, KR6j0288, KR6j0289, KR6j0290) are referred to in KR6j0295 (仁岳 Rényuè’s eleventh-century liturgy) as 凡四本 (“four versions”), and the four are explicitly compared there.
