Northern-Sòng Tiāntái master and the principal shānwài 山外 (off-mountain) tradition figure of the Sòng shānjiā / shānwài polemic; zì Jìngjué 淨覺 (also referenced as Jìngjué Rényuè 淨覺仁岳, Gūshān Jìngjué 孤山淨覺). DILA Authority A000165. Born 992. Death-date uncertain; productive into the late Northern Sòng.
Originally a disciple of Sìmíng Zhīlǐ 四明知禮 (知禮) at the Yánqìngsì 延慶寺, but subsequently broke with Zhīlǐ over doctrinal disputes and became one of the principal shānwài spokespersons against the shānjiā tradition. The shānwài tradition rejected Zhīlǐ’s xìngjùè doctrine and the strict identification of meditative practice with doctrinal classification, advocating instead for a more spiritualised reading of the Tiāntái apparatus that aligned with the Huāyán-school’s yīzhēn fǎjiè framework.
