About the work
A one-fascicle Esoteric dhāraṇī-sūtra on Jāṅgulī 常瞿利 (yet another transliteration of the same Sanskrit name treated in T1264a/b under the form 蘘麌哩 / 穰麌梨), translated by the otherwise-obscure Tang monk Qúduō 瞿多 — known only from this single canonical attribution. The text is the third of the three Chinese Jāṅgulī renderings preserved in the Taishō (KR6j0494, KR6j0495, KR6j0496). Despite the variant transliteration of the goddess’s name, the underlying Indian source is the same Jāṅgulīvidyā material.
Abstract
A short dhāraṇī-sūtra: the Buddha expounds the mantra of Jāṅgulī the Venom-Maiden (毒女) — for the same applied range as Amoghavajra’s renderings (snake-bite cure, poison-reversal, removal of hostile mantra-effects). The variant transliteration 常瞿利 preserves an early Sinitic phonetic value for the Sanskrit jaṅgulī. Because the translator Qúduō is otherwise unknown, the text’s date is unrecoverable beyond the broad bracket of mid- to late-Tang anonymous and minor-translator Esoteric activity. The dating bracket is conservative.
