About the work

Six-juan five-assembly (wǔhuì 五會) yǔlù of Shuǐjiàn Huìhǎi 慧海 水鑑慧海 (1626–1687, DILA A001716) — the earlier-edition version of his yǔlù, covering five of the eventual six abbacies. Companion-volume to KR6q0440 《天王水鑑海和尚六會錄》 (10 juan, 1690 integrated edition). See the full biographical context at 慧海 (second entry) and at KR6q0440 Abstract. Compiled by dharma-heir Fǎlán Yuánchéng 原澂. Printed as Jiāxīng Canon J29 B231.

Abstract

Relationship to KR6q0440. The present 五會錄 五會錄 is the 1672 partial-edition Huìhǎi yǔlù covering five abbacies. The 1690 edition (KR6q0440 六會錄) added the Hǎiyán Jīnsù Guǎnghuìsì 金粟廣慧寺 abbacy (1676 entry) and/or the Qīxián Chánsì 棲賢禪寺 abbacy as a sixth-assembly supplement. The five abbacies covered here are: (1) Tiěfósì 鐵佛寺 (from 1658); (2) Jīngzhōu Tiānwáng Chánsì 荊州天王禪寺 — the primary restoration-abbacy of the Táng-era Tiānwáng Dàowù 天王道悟 ancestral seat; (3) Huánglóngsì 黃龍寺 (Èzhōu 鄂州 = modern Wǔhàn); (4) Dìzàngsì 地藏寺 (Yízhēn 儀真 = modern Yízhēng in Jiāngsū, a seat also referenced as Huìhǎi’s kāishān chánzǔ 開山禪祖 seat per the Xú Xíng preface); (5) Hànyáng Qīxiánsì 漢陽棲賢寺 — the Hàn-yáng-based seat on the opposite bank from Huánglóng. This differs from the six-abbacy enumeration at KR6q0440 — the precise mapping between the two editions’ abbacy-lists deserves philological collation.

Compositional history. Cut with three front-prefaces:

  1. Xú Xíng 徐行 (檗菴氏 Bòānshì), dated 康熙壬子 10.15 = Kāngxī 11 / 1672 lunar 10.15 = ~4 December 1672 Western. Xú’s preface provides the key chronology: Huìhǎi had been teaching for “èrshí nián lái 二十年來” (twenty years) prior to 1672 — placing his first-teaching at c. 1652–1658 (matches the KR6q0440 “戊戌 1658 Tiěfó” starting-date). “Lì Wú rù Chǔ wǔ kāi cóngxí, qí jiān yī chuàng Tiānwáng, liǎng xīng Huánglóng, Dìzàng 歷吳入楚五開叢席其間一刱天王兩興黃龍地藏” — the preface’s own abbacy-summary differs slightly from the juan-structure and includes two Huánglóng residences.
  2. Yè Nánshēng 葉南生 (Jīngzhōu tuīguān) — the same 1659 preface preserved in KR6q0440.
  3. A third preface by an undated author (possibly at 鄂州 = Wǔhàn context).

notBefore = 1658 (Tiěfó first-teaching); notAfter = 1672 (Xú Xíng preface; the 1672 cutting precedes the 1676 Jīnsù abbacy and the 1690 integrated edition).

Contents by juan. Six juan of shàngtáng + ancillary material from the five abbacies enumerated above.

Tiyao

Not applicable — this is a Jiā-xīng-canon imprint (J29 B231), not a WYG text. The Xú Xíng 1672 preface provides the cutting-date and career-summary.

Other points of interest

  • Dual 五會錄 / 六會錄 editions. The preservation of both a 1672 five-assembly edition (KR6q0441) and a 1690 six-assembly integrated edition (KR6q0440) in sequential Jiāxīng numbering (B230–B231) parallels the dual-edition preservation pattern visible at KR6q0418 / KR6q0419 (Xuěguān Zhìyín 13-juan / 6-juan) and KR6q0434 / KR6q0435 (Fǎxǐyìn 12-juan / 2-juan Léngyán continuation). These multi-edition preservations reflect incremental Chán-master-corpus cutting as part of the ongoing Jiāxīng Canon project’s mid-Kāng-xī phase (1660s–90s).
  • Xú Xíng preface date as biographical anchor. The 1672-10-15 date and the “èrshí nián lái 二十年來” (twenty-year career) datum together fix 1652–58 as the earliest-activity window for Huìhǎi’s public teaching, before the formal 1658 Tiěfósì opening. This is a useful pre-1658 pre-abbacy biographical-chronology detail not preserved in KR6q0440.
