Sānfēng Zàng héshàng yǔlù 三峰藏和尚語錄

Recorded Sayings of Reverend Sān-fēng Zàng by 法藏 (說), 弘儲 (記)

About the work

Sixteen-juan yǔlù of Hànyuè Sānfēng Fǎzàng 法藏 漢月三峰法藏 (1573-11-11 – 1635-09-03), late-Míng LínjìYángqí dharma-heir of 圓悟 Mìyún Yuánwù (received fùfǎ in 1624) and the most theologically prominent — and ultimately most controversial — of Yuánwù’s heirs. Recorded by his chief dharma-heir Tuìwēng Hóngchǔ 弘儲 退翁弘儲 (1605–1672). Printed as Jiāxīng Canon J34 B299. The j. 16 niánpǔ (year-chronology, 1573–1635) is the principal source for Fǎzàng’s biography.

Abstract

Authorship. Per the 法藏 note: lay surname 蘇, native of Liángxī 梁溪 (Wúxī, Jiāngsū). Lifedates 萬曆 1 / 10/7 = 1573-11-11 to 崇禎 8 / 7/22 = 1635-09-03, age 63. Hànyuè 漢月; hào Sānfēng 三峰 (after Sānfēng Qīngliángyuàn 三峰清涼院 at Yúshān 虞山 in Chángshú), also Yúmì 於密, Tiānshān 天山, Xuánmù 玄墓. Abbacies at Sānfēng Qīngliáng, Xuánmù (Dèngwèishān, Sūzhōu), Tiānshān, and Wànfēng / Shèngēnsì 萬峰 / 聖恩禪寺 at Píngwàng 平望.

Dating. notBefore = 1624 (post-fùfǎ receipt from Mìyún and beginning of independent preaching). notAfter = 1635 (death). The 16-juan corpus covers his complete public preaching career.

Doctrinal centrality. Author of KR6q0167 《五宗原》 (the 1628 theological defense of the Five Houses of Chán doctrine) which precipitated the major seventeenth-century Chán controversy. Mìyún Yuánwù wrote KR6q0168 《闢妄救略說》 against him; the dispute reached imperial attention with the Yōngzhèng emperor’s 1733 《御製揀魔辨異錄》 declaring Fǎzàng a heretic and banning his writings. Despite this, the J34 B299 yǔlù survived in the Jiāxīng Canon imprint.

Lineage. Hànyuè Fǎzàng → Tuìwēng Hóngchǔ 弘儲 (continuator at Sūzhōu Língyánsì, KR6q0475) — the principal sub-lineage that became the target of the 1733 imperial proscription.

Translations and research

  • Jiang Wu, Enlightenment in Dispute: The Reinvention of Chan Buddhism in Seventeenth-Century China (Oxford University Press, 2008), chapters 5–6 — the principal English-language treatment of the Mì-yún / Hàn-yuè / Yōng-zhèng controversy.

Other points of interest

  • Subject of the most consequential Chán doctrinal controversy of the seventeenth century. The Wǔzōng yuán / Pìwàng jiùlüèshuō dispute, prolonged through the Zhìfēi biàn 智非辨 and other rejoinders, dominated mid-seventeenth-century Chán intellectual life and was suppressed by Yōngzhèng in 1733 with consequences for the Sānfēng line lasting into the modern era.
  • Survival despite proscription. That this 16-juan yǔlù was preserved in the Jiāxīng Canon despite the 1733 imperial banning of Fǎzàng’s writings reflects the limits of Yōngzhèng’s suppression — the Jiāxīng Canon, having been printed through privately-funded subscription in the seventeenth century, was not under direct imperial editorial control.
