About the work

Single-juan yǔlù of Fóyǔ Chèyù 徹御 佛語徹御 (d. 1674-01-21, age 40), LínjìYángqí dharma-heir of Huìjué Zhàoyī 照衣 慧覺照衣 (1605–1673) at Yúzhōu Xiāngguósì 渝州香國寺 (Chóngqìng). Compiled by fǎsì Fǎjié 法傑 + Yìtáng Fǎxiù 法秀 děng biān. Front-preface by Shèngkě Déyù 聖可 / 德玉 (1628–1701) — Chèyù’s dharma-uncle in the Pòshān-line. Printed as Jiāxīng Canon J35 B341.

Abstract

Authorship. Per the 徹御 note: native of Jiāzhōu 嘉州 (Sìchuān), lay surname Fàn 范. Tonsured at age 10 under Zhàoyī. Awakening on a corpse-meditation incident. Sole abbacy at Chóngqìng Xiāngguósì. Died 康熙12 12/15 = 1674-01-21 Gregorian, age 40.

Dating. notBefore = c. 1665 (post-transmission preaching). notAfter = 1674 (death). Brief 40-year life and one-juan extent reflect the brevity of his ministry.

Lineage. Pòshān Hǎimíng → Huìjué Zhàoyī → Fóyǔ Chèyù → Yìtáng Fǎxiù 法秀. The Pòshān-line through Zhàoyī produced multiple short-lived but documented yǔlù — Chèyù at age 40, Fǎxiù succession at Xiāngguósì.
